Plasma 5.23 Anniversary Edition Beta for Debian available for testing

Last week has seen the release of the first beta of Plasma 5.23 Anniversary Edition. Work behind the scenes to get this release as soon as possible into Debian has progressed well.

Starting with today, we provide binaries of Plasma 5.23 for Debian stable (bullseye), testing, and unstable, in each case for three architectures: amd64, i386, and aarch64.

To test the current beta, please add

deb https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/npreining:/debian-kde:/plasma523/DISTRIBUTION/ ./

to your apt sources (replacing DISTRIBUTION with one of Debian_11 (for Bullseye), Debian_Testing, or Debian_Unstable). For further details see this blog.

Warning

This is a beta release, and let me recall the warning from the upstream release announcement:

DISCLAIMER: This is beta software and is released for testing purposes. You are advised to NOT use Plasma 25th Anniversary Edition Beta in a production environment or as your daily desktop. If you do install Plasma 25th Anniversary Edition Beta, you must be prepared to encounter (and report to the creators) bugs that may interfere with your day-to-day use of your computer.

Thank you for your great effort of porting up-to-date KDE software to Debian.

I noticed an issue (also in 5.22.5) regarding baloorunner, as it fails to start:

    $ systemctl –user status plasma-baloorunner.service
    ● plasma-baloorunner.service – KRunner provider for baloo file indexer
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/user/plasma-baloorunner.service; static)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Tue 2021-09-21 14:18:56 CEST; 19min ago
    Process: 9961 ExecCondition=/usr/bin/kde-systemd-start-condition –condition baloofilerc:Basic Settings:Indexing-Enabled:true (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    Process: 9962 ExecStart=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libexec/baloorunner (code=exited, status=255/EXCEPTION)
    Main PID: 9962 (code=exited, status=255/EXCEPTION)
    CPU: 31ms

Sep 21 14:18:56 debian systemd[7829]: Starting KRunner provider for baloo file indexer…
    Sep 21 14:18:56 debian systemd[7829]: plasma-baloorunner.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=255/EXCEPTION
    Sep 21 14:18:56 debian systemd[7829]: plasma-baloorunner.service: Failed with result ‘exit-code’.
Sep 21 14:18:56 debian systemd[7829]: Failed to start KRunner provider for baloo file indexer.

This leads to `systemctl –user is-system-running` responding `degraded` instead of `running`.

  3. Motlke says:

Thank you very much sir for all your work and effort! Much appreciated. I just updated to 5.22.90 and everything works great! 🙂 I do have a question though, apart from Debian, I use KDE Neon Testing on Wayland too, mostly to keep track of the progress in that regard, and since this is still “beta” software, and considering Neon Testing gets updates every single day, with a bunch of stuff, will this release follow a similar “update schedule”?

    • No, I won’t do daily updates from the git repositories, sorry. I might look in the future how to automate the git->package stuff, but for now I will cherry-pick fixes that I can informed about till the proper release.

You are my Hero, thanks for great work

  5. João Pedro Sousa says:

Hi Norbert! Again thank you for all of your work. Easily updated to the Plasma 5.23 Anniversary Edition Beta and working beatifully for now. Many, many thanks!

I’m having a situation here, Plasma system monitor isn’t working properly for me in Bullseye; it shows nothing.

It does work just fine in KDE Neon Testing.

  7. Luc says:

So while having succes on one, PC I get a Segmentation Fault in kded5 on another PC. Debug info is not available. How to debug this?

    Operating System: Debian GNU/Linux
    KDE Plasma Version: 5.22.90
    KDE Frameworks Version: 5.86.0
    Qt Version: 5.15.2
    Kernel Version: 5.10.0-8-amd64 (64-bit)
    Graphics Platform: X11
    Processors: 4 × Intel® Core™ i5-4200U CPU @ 1.60GHz
    Memory: 7.2 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa DRI Intel® HD Graphics 4400

    • Motlke says:

You need to install kded5-dbgsym for debug info to be available.

      • Luc says:

I installed below. Unfortunately without succes: the seg faults occur and debug info can not be generated according to the crash report.

        luc@wolder:~$ dpkg -l | egrep kded5
ii kded5 5.86.0-1~np1 amd64 Extensible daemon for providing session services
        ii kded5-dbgsym 5.86.0-1~np1 amd64 debug symbols for kded5
        luc@wolder:~$

  8. Sander says:

Updating complained again about mismatch in file size. Apt suggest “is a mirror sync in progress?”. Switching host from download.opensuse.org to downloadcontent.opensuse.org fixes the issue.

Not a packaging issue, but I want to note the (context) menu placement is still messed up in 5.23

  9. Sedat says:

    Thanks Norbert.

Approx. a week I am using KDE/Plasma/Wayland 5.23 (version 5.22.90) here on Debian/unstable AMD64. I waited long for the middle-mouse-paste feature and also switched over from ksysguard to plasma-systemmonitor.

Just saw that October 1st is “Plasma 25th Anniversary Edition Beta Testing Day”. (see [0] and [1]).

  10. Manfred says:

I’ve installed on my really old Testing Notebook (Dell Latitude D620 with Core2Duo) and got my first real great Wayland experience using KDE Plasma! Looks like it works better then X11 on this Computer.
Even Chromium (using linux-mint package from http://packages.linuxmint.com/search.php?release=Debbie&section=any&keyword=chromium because of the security disaster the debian chromium package is) works great in Wayland mode.
I hope we’ll see stable 5.23 in near future. All I’m missing to totally obsolet X11 completely is sddm 0.20 release with wayland support.

  11. Tomasz says:

Are the packages in this repository the same as with the stable release of KDE 5.23 or will there be a different repository as Plasma 5.23 is now final?

    Thanks

  12. Luc says:

Thanks for making this happen! I installed all from Debian sid now, works like a charm.
Question: I help by translating some Plasma packages: Discover and also Latte-Dock. The translations are in the correct repos, but I do not see them in my desktop. When/how are they included?

    • I am not really sure about how the translation system works for the KDE packages, but I know that the translations are done in separate repositories and merged for release. So it can easily be that the translations have been taken at a previous point in time and not all fixes made it in. But they should – AFAIK – be contained in 5.23.1 (coming soon).
