Only a short update on the current status of my KDE/Plasma package for Debian sid and testing:

  • Frameworks 5.72
  • Plasma 5.19.4
  • Apps 20.04.3
  • Digikam 7.0.0
  • Ark CVE-2020-16116 fixed in version 20.04.3-1~np2

Hope that helps a few people. See this post for how to setup archives.

That’s awesome! Thanks for your work!

  3. You bet it helps!. Debian Qt-KDE Team is more or less dead in the water.

    • Good to hear, but the Debian Qt-KDE Team is NOT dead in the water, they are doing a good work on the Qt side (albeit a bit late), and working on updating packages, too.

Thank you so much for your work. Amazing job! I was looking for this update on Debian KDE Plasma for so long. I’m now enjoying Debian Testing + KDE Plasma 5.19.4. I really appreciate it. Debian could be so much better… I can’t really understand why isn’t the Debian KDE/QT Team capable of doing it in the first place.

    • You are welcome.

Concerning the question about the Debian team: I don’t know, but my guess is that they Bond themselves with an incredible set of regulations and rules how to update, which means that each single update takes a lot of time.

I on the contrast don’t care a lot for hope the changelog entry looks, how the git commits are done – even in the group there we collaborate – I expect everyone to know what they are doing. Thus, it is much easier to upload a new set of packages, and when I see breakage on OBS, I’ll fix it afterwards. This is much more efficient and quick, with the same end effect, but without the loads of grind and crumble.

I understand that heavy regulations can hinder the proficiency and bring results much later than desired or possible. What I can’t understand is if that’s an issue – and it clearly it is for so long as you single handed are able to show – that ultimately prejudices the whole Debian distro user experience performance to many people – why doesn’t anyone do something about it? Is it easier to keep things as they are and accept them as “good enough”? As everything in life there should be a balance – good rules and regulations are meant to help with the structure, organisation and management and they exist to serve the people and not so that people serve the regulations. Anyway we need a better Debian KDE/QT team management/structure/results that’s for sure.

    Thanks a lot, Norbert.
As usual, a seemless upgrade experience.
    One question for me:
Will “your” apps from the OBS repos coexist with “their” apps from the “official” Debian repo?

    • Hi Thomas,
      thanks for the feedback.
Yes, my packages are made and named in a way that packages from the official Debian QT/KDE Team take precedence, as you might have seen in the recent update rounds. I also regularly sync with their work, so my packages should not show any incompatibilities with the official ones.

      • Thomas Florek says:

        Thanks for clarification, Norbert.
No incompatibilities between app versions here.
