KDE/Plasma 5.19.2 for Debian

After the long wait (or should I say The Long Dark) finally Qt 5.14 has arrived in Debian/unstable, and thus the doors for KDE/Plasma 5.19 are finally open.

I have been preparing this release for quite some time, but due to Qt 5.12 I could only test it in a virtual machine using Debian/experimental. But now, finally, a full upgrade to Plasma 5.19(.2) has arrived.

Unfortunately, it turned out that the OBS build servers are either overloaded, incapable, or broken, but they do not properly build the necessary packages. Thus, I make the Plasma 5.19.2 (and framework) packages available via my server, for amd64. Please use the following apt line:

deb https://www.preining.info/debian/ unstable kde

(The source packages are also there, just in case you want to rebuild them for i386).

Not that this requires my GPG key to be imported, best is to put it into /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/preining-norbert.asc.

For KDE Applications please still use

deb https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/npreining:/debian-kde:/apps/Debian_Unstable/ ./

but I might sooner or later move that to my server, too. OBS servers are too broken with respect to considerable big rebuild groups it seems.

So, enjoy your shiny new KDE/Plasma desktop on Debian, too!

1.5 hours after I switched from 5.17 on Debian to 5.18 from your OBS repo 🙂 sweet!

Everything seems to work perfectly. Thanks!

  2. Sander says:

No I’m on 5.19 now, which is working fine.

Thank you very much! I like KDE and this means so much to me.

I’d love to learn how you’re doing what you’re doing. KDE is my desktop environment of choice and Debian is my distro. Normally I stick to stable but I have a laptop that I want to run wayland on for touch screen and trackpad reasons, but I need a newer KDE for it to work well. So anyway, I have a vested interest in seeing newer KDE versions in Debian. That and I’m very curious how you manage to build all these packages. Any good tutorials or places to get started?

Thank you so much for the new Plasma and KDE debs. I’ve upgraded Debian testing on my laptop and PC installing QT libs from Sid.

    Thanks for your work.

In kmail 4:20.04.2-1~np1, the body of email messages is not displayed (I get a blank area below the subject, sender etc).

    • Dimitris says:

Solved by installing libgrantlee-templates5 and libgrantlee-textdocument5 from debian/experimental.

Hi Norbert, I was able to upgrade from KDE 5.18.5 to KDE 5.19.2 successfully tonight on MX Linux version 19.2. As before, I used the Debian Sid repository to assist with the upgrade, and disabled your KDE repos and Sid when I had finished the upgrade. Afterward, everything in KDE is working and the MX tools are working. However, it appears that during the upgrade python3 was upgraded to a version that conflicts with virtualbox, so getting virtualbox installed is the only thing I see right now that I’ll have to work out.

  8. Hey

I put the public key inside /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/preining-norbert.asc but I still have GPG errors, can you help me?

    • Hi Bruno
(Nice name btw, rings a lot of bells for me having lived in Italy for many years)

I cannot help you without you sending the actual error messages. Best is via email!

    • Andy Prough says:

Try running the following command after placing the key in the directory:
      sudo gpg –import /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/obs-npreining.asc

      • Andy Prough says:

That should be a double-dash in front of “import” in that command.

        • No no no no no, this should **not** be necessary. Actually it shouldn’t change anything, since the keyring of root in /home/root/.gnupg is not considered during package installation.

          • Andy Prough says:

That’s strange, since it’s always necessary on antiX. The repo will not update without running it on antiX. I wonder what the difference is?

    Hi Norbert,
First of all, thank you very much for making these packages available. I’m loving the KDE 5.19 experience. I have been using them for nearly a month now.
Of late (read as past two to three days), I’m getting this error:

W: Skipping acquire of configured file ‘kde/binary-amd64/Packages’ as repository ‘https://www.preining.info/debian unstable InRelease’ doesn’t have the component ‘kde’

Has the repo moved, or is it down? Any idea of what the problem might be?

  10. X_Server says:

Hello. Please tell me where you can download KWin-lowlatency for KDE Plasma 5.19? I really need! Thanks in advance!
